Georgia News: Savannah Gets Supersize Cargo Ships; Early Voting

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) -- The federal government has given its final approval to deepen the Savannah harbor to make room for supersized cargo ships. Georgia has been pursuing the project for 16 years The $652 million project could be completed by 2016. A major expansion of the Panama Canal finishes in 2014.

ATLANTA (AP) -- Georgians are taking advantage of their first chance to vote early on a Saturday, with long lines reported at polling locations. Voter registration offices in Fulton, Cobb, Gwinnett and Rockdale counties all had long lines wrapped around buildings and down sidewalks. More than 780,000 Georgians had voted early as of Friday.

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. (AP) -- Emergency officials are urging visitors to Georgia beaches to keep out of the water as Hurricane Sandy whips up dangerous rip currents. The storm is well offshore, but forecasters say tropical-storm-force winds could still rake the Georgia coastline.

FORT VALLEY, Ga. (AP) -- A Georgia Superior Court judge says a 40-year-old felony record is enough to keep a candidate for Peach County coroner off the November ballot, even though the candidate was pardoned. The judge ruled that doesn't change Georgia law, which bars anyone with a felony record.
