SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) -- Georgia is launching an initiative to protect its military bases in the coming years as the Pentagon cuts its budget and possibly closes some bases. The Governor's Defense Initiative, announced by Gov. Nathan Deal last month, will try to strengthen its lobbying of defense policymakers in Washington.
ATLANTA (AP) -- Federal regulators have sued over the collapse of a Sandy Springs bank, accusing its leaders of taking "unreasonable risks" while running the institution. RockBridge Commercial Bank opened in 2006 and raised $36 million in cash. It failed three years later.
COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) -- A woman in Columbus was killed when she was struck by a pickup truck. Loretta Williams was pronounced dead Saturday morning at a hospital. She was hit while walking along a local road. An autopsy was scheduled for Monday.
DECATUR, Ga. (AP) -- DeKalb County residents may be required to pay more in property taxes. County CEO Burrell Ellis has proposed a 1.69 millage rate increase. For someone with a home worth $200,000, the proposed tax hike would cost another $49 annually. He says it's to make up for lost revenue from the creation of the city of Brookhaven.
