The Georgia Department of Transportation has declared Highway 27 a Freight Corridor.

The declaration is part of a plan to make sure improvements to State Highways are adequately funded.

The DOT declared Georgia’s entire interstate highway system and other key highways as freight corridors. That designation exempts projects on those roads from a state law that requires federal transportation funds be divided equally among the state’s 14 congressional districts.

Last year, the DOT Office of Planning released a study warning the state it could lose its edge as a freight hub without nearly $10 billion in improvements to highways.
