Georgia Businessman Convicted of Bribery in Alabama

The jury in Montgomery returned a verdict Thursday against Leland J. "Sonny" McDowell, 57, of Grovetown, Ga. McDowell's co-defendant, former state Public Safety Department employee James Potts, pleaded guilty March 27.

Potts' job included helping Alabama's Department of Human Resources solicit bids for a fingerprint system to do criminal background checks.

U.S. Attorney George Beck said McDowell worked for a fingerprint machine company.

He says McDowell offered and Potts agreed to accept $1,700 up front and $1 for every fingerprint scan for recommending his company in 2007.

The company, Southern Detention Technologies, got the contract but state officials soon canceled it.

A sentencing hearing has not been set.
