Ga. House, Senate Back Drug Testing for Welfare Recipients

ATLANTA (AP) -- People seeking welfare benefits in Georgia would face drug tests before getting cash under separate bills backed by House and Senate lawmakers.

The House of Representatives voted 114-59 on Wednesday to require that people seeking welfare payments pass a drug test. The Senate approved similar legislation by a vote of 35-18. If money allows, the law would require that welfare recipients pass a randomly scheduled drug test at least once every two years.

Those who fail a first test could reapply. But additional drug tests could make them ineligible for benefits.

Supporters say such legislation could encourage people to stop using drugs and would protect a taxpayer benefit. Critics condemned the proposal as unnecessary legislation that unfairly criminalizes poor people.

AMEN Katherine! It is about time. I really don't understand the delay. And Yes, it should definitely be more often than every two years (that would be ineffective). I do drug testing every day and most of the ppl who object to drug testing do so for obvious reasons. If you have nothing to hide... Also, I cannot tell you how many ppl that I test (regularly) who will be POSITIVE for illegal drugs and yet readily admit that they are unemployed (and receiving benifits) YET they have (our tax) money paying for their illegal activity. We all have our own financial struggles and I do not want to buy someone's drugs for them (period). In reality, it is simple common sense!

Well if poor people can afford expensive drugs they don't need welfare. Why should the State of Georgia give help to people taking drugs ? I think they should take a drug test once every 6 months to qualify for help. If people need help so desperately then they should be willing to take a drug test, if you are not willing then you've got something you're trying to hide.
