Ga. Halts Summer Unemployment for School Workers

ATLANTA (AP) -- New rules in Georgia are prohibiting private school teachers, contract bus drivers, cafeteria workers and other seasonal school workers from receiving unemployment checks when they're off during the summer.

Public school teachers have long been unable to collect unemployment in the summertime. State Labor Commissioner Mark Butler says the rule was changed out of fairness to teachers who complained.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports it's unclear how many Georgia workers are affected. The state doesn't track employment by occupation. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports 64,702 Georgians worked as private "educational service" employees last fall.

Everton Daswell, who works as a private contractor driving a shuttle bus at Kennesaw State University, says he's lost roughly one-fifth of his income because of the change.
