ATLANTA (AP) -- The state Board of Education is recommending that the members of the Miller County Board of Education be removed from office.

The state board voted after a two-hour hearing under a new state law that allows the governor to remove school board members in districts in danger of losing accreditation. Miller County was put on probation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in early November.

The recommendation now goes to Gov. Nathan Deal.

Miller County board members declined comment after the hearing.

The state has held similar hearings for districts in Atlanta, Montgomery County and Coffee County, but so far has not recommended ousting board members in those districts.

The 1,100-student district in Colquitt near the Alabama line has three schools, all housed in one building.
