Ga. Asks Supreme Court to Reject Fla. Water Suit

ATLANTA (AP) -- Attorneys for the state of Georgia are asking the U.S. Supreme Court to stay out of the latest legal battle in a long fight over water rights with Florida.

Florida last fall asked the Supreme Court to intervene in deciding how water flowing from the Chattahoochee River across the Georgia-Florida line should be shared by the states. Georgia's lawyers filed a response last week, saying Florida was attempting to sue "the wrong party, in the wrong court, and at the wrong time."

Georgia officials say involvement by the Supreme Court would disrupt the Army Corps of Engineers' work on a new water allocation plan in the region. They also say Florida failed to show metro Atlanta's water consumption is to blame for a near-collapse of the Apalachicola Bay oyster industry.
