BUFORD, Ga. (AP) -- Police in suburban Atlanta say a couple accused of locking their son in the basement of their home for more than a year are facing criminal charges.
Gwinnett County police spokesman Jake Smith said Thursday that the Buford couple is accused of confining the 13-year-old boy in a small room with a mattress and a makeshift toilet. Authorities say the boy was imprisoned for much of the past two years.
Smith says authorities began investigating after the Georgia Division of Family and Children Services received an anonymous tip about the boy on June 15.
Authorities say the child was fed consistently and showed no signs of physical abuse.
Police say the Division of Family and Children Services now has custody of the boy and his nine siblings.
