BLOUNTSTOWN, Fla. (AP) -- A Florida Panhandle student faces charges after an unloaded handgun was found at Blountstown High School.

The incident happened on Tuesday.

Principal Debbie Williams found an abandoned backpack on campus with a .22 caliber semi-automatic handgun inside.

The backpack was turned over to the school's resource deputy.

Investigators from the Calhoun County Sheriff's Office determined the backpack belonged to a 17-year-old senior.

The student admitted bringing the handgun to campus. Investigators say the student told them he was having some issues off campus after school and felt threatened. So he brought the handgun for protection.

The gun wasn't loaded and there was no ammunition in the backpack.

The student was arrested on third-degree felony charges of possession of a firearm on campus.
