ATLANTA (AP) -- The FBI has named a new special agent in charge of its Atlanta office.

The FBI announced Thursday that Director Robert Mueller has tapped Mark Giuliano for the top spot in Atlanta. Giuliano most recently served as the executive assistant director of the National Security Branch.

He became an FBI special agent in Washington in 1988 and worked on the Safe Streets and Gang Task Force and served as a SWAT assault team leader.

He has held a variety of positions with the FBI in Georgia, many of them having to do with counterterrorism and national security. He also served as the FBI's on-scene commander in Afghanistan, where he led an FBI group that supported U.S. Special Forces components.

He has an economics degree from the College of Wooster.
