ATLANTA (AP) -- Drought conditions across Georgia got worse in
May, with the southern half of the state experiencing the worst effects.

State climatologist David Stooksbury said Tuesday that conditions are expected to get worse with little rain and high temperatures over the next several days.

Pockets of southeast and southwest Georgia are currently classified as being in an extreme drought. Conditions are also dry to the north.

Columbus has received 63 percent of its normal rainfall.

Macon has only gotten about 60 percent.

The drought has made spring planting difficult for farmers.

Stooksbury said drought conditions increase the risk of wildfires.

He forecast that most municipalities and businesses will have
enough water through the summer.
