ATLANTA (AP) -- Police say a 12-year-old child who initially told police that he was ambushed by a man and shot later admitted that he fired the gun on himself.
WSB-TV (http://bit.ly/JyXBqS ) reports that the child admitted to DeKalb County police that he and two friends were planning to burglarize homes when he shot himself.
Police say the child originally said he was shot by a man Thursday in a wooded area in the neighborhood off Buford Highway. Police put Montclair Elementary School on lockdown as a precaution.
CBS Atlanta reports that the child accidently shot himself in the backside while skipping school with two other teenagers, who are 16 and 17 years old.
DeKalb County Public Safety Director Wiz Miller says the child was not a student at the school.
