The Georgia Department of Natural Resources reports that the bald eagle population is climbing along the Georgia coast.
In the Savannah area, an ongoing survey of bald eagle nests puts Chatham County's latest count at 26.
The Savannah Morning News reports that the number is up considerably from last year's record of 17 nests.
In northwest Georgia, a state Department of Natural Resources official says the numbers of bald eagles in that region is slowly climbing. He tells The Rome News-Tribune that eagle nests are being found in areas where they weren't expected.
Last year, Georgia had 163 confirmed nests. DNR Non-Game Director Jim Ozier said he hopes to hit that many when the survey is completed this year and expects the number to likely be between 160 and 170.
