Ala DPS Dorker, Ga Man Face Bribery Charges

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -- An employee of Alabama's public safety agency and a Georgia man are facing federal bribery charges.

Prosecutors in Montgomery say 56-year-old James E. Potts of Montgomery and 57-year-old Leland J. "Sonny" McDowell of Grovetown, Ga., are each named in a four-count indictment

U.S. Attorney George Beck says Potts' job with the Alabama Department of Public Safety in 2007 included soliciting bids for a system that uses fingerprints to check on criminal backgrounds. He allegedly took bribes from McDowell, who worked for a fingerprint machine company called Southern Detention Technologies.

Prosecutors say Potts received a check for $1,700 and agreed to take $1 for each fingerprint scan.

Court records aren't yet available to show whether either man has a lawyer.

A Public Safety spokeswoman declined immediate comment.
