Little did they know it would open the door for a career.
The students got the chance to be a part of an internship program that will give them 4 years of experience in their field
“The internship with the corp of engineers and they will be working at the Walter F George dam in Fort Gaines.” Industrial systems technology teacher Tony Greene said.
“This gives me the opportunity to get my hands on equipment and get hands-on experience and build a career. That’s very rare in this day in time to have that opportunity.” Student Blake Wood said.
And getting hands-on experience is crucial to having a successful career.
But they have to put in a lot of time.
“They had to take the summer off to work full-time for power plants in the region and get some training there and then they'll work full- time at the dam while going to school.” Green said.
The students however, don’t seem to mind the challenging schedule.
“It means a lot it feels like all the work and hard effort I put in, schooling I’ve been through, I’m getting the opportunity to get a position. It means a lot.” Blake Tillery said.
And Greene says even if they don’t end up working for the corps of engineers, there are many other jobs in the wiregrass for the students who have the kind of experience they're getting.
The students will get paid and offered full-time benefits while working at the dam in Fort Gaines.
