1 dead, 1 injured crossing Savannah street

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - Savannah police say a Swedish national was killed and another was injured when a pickup truck struck a group of Swedish conference delegates crossing a downtown street.

Police say the incident occurred about 10 p.m. Tuesday as the group toured the city.

Savannah-Chatham police spokeswoman Judy Pal says the man who was struck died of injuries just before midnight at Memorial University Medical Center. He was identified as 61-year-old Nils Eric Svensson of Skanor, Sweden.

Pal said the injured woman, 45-year-old Anne Christine Bjarkby, is expected to recover.

The driver of the Ford Ranger pickup was questioned in the ongoing investigation.

About a dozen representatives of the Swedish city of Växjö are in Savannah for a conference.
