Former President to Address New Baptist Group

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) - Former President Jimmy Carter and
poet Maya Angelou will speak this month at a regional meeting of
the New Baptist Covenant at Wake Forest University in North
Carolina.

Angelou is to deliver the opening address April 24, with Carter giving the closing speech April 25.

Other regional meetings of the New Baptist Covenant have been held in Alabama and Missouri, and others are scheduled in Oklahoma and Chicago.

The meetings grew out of last year's Celebration of a New Baptist Covenant in Atlanta, which united black and white Baptists in what many viewed as an alternative to the conservative Southern Baptist Convention. More than 15,000 people from dozens of Baptist groups attended that meeting.
