Farewell ceremony held for Georgia Guard unit

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - More than 300 National Guard soldiers from Georgia are preparing for deployment to Afghanistan.

The soldiers, joined by relatives and friends, participated in a farewell ceremony Sunday at the National Guard Armory in Savannah.

All are assigned to the 48th Brigade unit.

Brigadier General Maria Britt, commander of the Georgia National Guard, said the 48th has personnel from Savannah, Springfield and Brunswick.

The Guard said soldiers will undergo additional training at Camp Atterbury in Indiana and Camp Shelby in Mississippi.

The 48th will deploy in May.
