ATLANTA (AP) - A Georgia man is set to be executed tonight for stabbing a female neighbor to death after she spurned his advances.
A jury convicted 65-five-year-old Robert Newland was convicted of murder in 1987 and sentenced to die for stabbing Carol Sanders Beatty in the garden of her home on St. Simons Island.
The 27-year-old woman was a former state and national amateur diving
champion and died hours later at a hospital.
Newland would be the first person executed in Georgia this year.
He is sentenced to die at 7 p.m. at the state prison in Jackson.
Newland has declined a special last-meal request. Instead, he will be offered the prison's meal tray, which consists of chicken and rice, carrots, collard greens, rolls, bread putting and iced tea.
