2,400 Georgia Guard members to head to Afghanistan

DALTON, Ga. (AP) - Lt. Col. Kenneth Baldowski says about 2,400 of the 4,000 soldiers in Georgia National Guard's 108th Calvary Regiment will be heading for a one-year deployment to Afghanistan over the next two to three months.

The first group to be deployed will head to Ft. Polk, La., next month for training. Guard spokesman Baldowski said Tuesday that once in Afghanistan, the Georgia Guard members will be training the Afghan police and military forces.

The unit was sent to Iraq in 2005 when it was a heavy artillery unit. The brigade now is a Reconnaissance, Surveillance and Target Acquisition unit.
