Police ID suspect, slain bystander in bank heist

COFFEYVILLE, Kan. (AP) - Authorities have identified a bank robbery suspect and a bystander from Georgia he allegedly shot and killed during a police chase in the southeast Kansas town of Coffeyville.

Police Commander Mike Brown said in a news release that 39-year-old Ross A. Williams of Claremore, Okla., was arrested without incident at 8 p.m. Tuesday. Williams is suspected of holding up a Bank of America branch in Coffeyville shortly before 5 p.m.

The robber fled in a car parked nearby, and police began a chase that ended when the suspect bailed out of the car and opened fire with a rifle. A bystander who died in the gunfire has been identified as Willie Neal of Georgia. Neal's age and hometown were not immediately known.

Williams is jailed while authorities prepare charges.
