MARIETTA, Ga. (AP) - Graphic Packaging has announced plans to
close four plants around the country by the end of September that
will eliminate 650 jobs in an effort to save $90 million by next
Plants scheduled to be closed are carton plants in Tuscaloosa,
Ala.; Morris, Ill.; and Muncie, Ind.; and a multiwall-bag packaging
factory in Cantonment, Fla.
The company also plans to lay off 60 people at a plant in Elk
Grove, Ill. No cuts are planned for the company's Marietta, Ga.,
Graphic Packaging - which lost $14.4 million in the third
quarter and has $3.25 billion in debt - already closed four plants
last year to cut costs. It announced the closing of a folding
carton plant in Smyrna, Tenn., earlier this year.
