ATLANTA (AP) - A former Forsyth County deputy and his wife have
admitted keeping an illegal immigrant as an unpaid nanny in their home.
Russell and Malika Garrett of Woodstock pleaded guilty Friday to
harboring an alien for private financial gain. She also admitted lying to FBI and Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents
investigating the claims.
The Garretts, both 43, will be sentenced April 22. He faces up
to 10 years in federal prison. She could get a maximum of 15 years.
Prosecutors say from February 2003 through June 2005, the Garretts harbored the Indian woman, who was first underpaid and later not paid at all. They said she could have left at any time but acknowledged telling her she would be deported and jailed. She finally escaped with help from a neighbor.
