ATLANTA (AP) - One worker is dead and 18 others injured after a
pedestrian bridge under construction collapsed this morning near
the garden's entrance.
Authorities say builders were working on the so-called "canopy
walk" that arches over a ravine to give visitors an elevated view
of the new gardens when the structure gave way around 9 a.m.
Joggers, dog walkers and others were in popular adjacent Piedmont Park north of downtown, but only workers were at the construction site.
Electrical worker Juan Padilla (Pah-Dee'-ah) and his partner
were taking a break from working under the bridge at the time of
the collapse. He says it sounded like an explosion.
Padilla fought back tears as he said he knew many of the victims.
An officer from the Occupational Safey and Heath Aministration
was at the scene to see if federal safety standards were followed.
The park closed to visitors for the day following the accident.
