Court Rejects Bid By Florida Death Row Inmate

ATLANTA (AP) - Federal appeals judges have overturned a lower
court's decision to hear a 76-year-old Florida death row inmate's
appeal of his sentence for the 1986 murder of his former live-in
lover.

A three-judge panel of the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on
Thursday rejected George Porter Jr.'s habeas corpus petition in the
shooting death of Evelyn Williams, in Melbourne. Porter also was
sentenced to life in prison for killing Walter Burrows, who had a
relationship with Williams at the time.

A federal judge in Florida granted Porter's habeas petition,
which challenged the death sentence based on claims that he was
mentally ill. The state appealed that decision to the Atlanta
court.

Porter's sentence also has been upheld by the Florida Supreme
Court.
