WATKINSVILLE, Ga. (AP) - A central Georgia county is offering retirement packages to employees to help trim payroll.
Oconee County is wooing about two dozen employees age 62 and
older to retirement with a $7,500 bonus and beefed up health benefits for at least a year.
County commissioners approved the move Tuesday.
County personnel director Malinda Smith said if all 24 retire, it would save the county $670,000.
She said some of the emptied positions would be refilled with entry-level workers.
Employees would retire by the end of the year. Workers have until February to accept the offer.
