Southwire plans layoffs early next year

WATKISVILLE, Ga. (AP) - The Southwire electric wire plant in
Watkinsville says it expects to lay off 80 or more of its 140
workers after Jan. 1.

Mike Wiggins, executive vice president for Carrollton-based
Southwire, said the company is faced with a plummeting
home-building market.

He said the Watkinsville plant will restructure to produce only
bare copper wire.

Wiggins said the workers laid off will receive severence pay.
