Zoo Atlanta Letting Public Name New Panda Cub

ATLANTA (AP) - Zoo Atlanta is asking the public to help name its
new panda cub. Voting opened Monday at the zoo's Web site, www.zooatlanta.org. More than 2,400 ballots were cast during the first day of voting.

Voters can choose from a list of 12 names nominated by local media, zoo keepers and Chinese panda officials. The names range from Hua Sheng, which means "Peanut," to Fu Mei, which means "handsome and happy boy."

Voting ends Dec. 3. The winning moniker will be announced Dec. 8.

The panda cub, born Aug. 31, is the second cub born at Zoo Atlanta and the only one born at a U.S. zoo so far this year.

The zoo's first cub, Mei Lan was born two years ago.
