Zoo Atlanta's pregnant elephant has died.
Zoo officials are investigating what caused the Monday night death of the 26-year-old African elephant, which was in the third trimester of her first pregnancy.
The elephant, named Dottie, had lost about 800 pounds, about 10 percent of her body weight, in the last two weeks and had decreased protein levels.
The zoo's vet team is planning to perform a necropsy. Dottie was one of three African elephants at the zoo, where she lived since 1986.
Her calf would have been the zoo's first baby Loxodonata Africana. The calf was due in April 2009.
