Columbus Real Estate Agent Killed, Tenant Arrested

COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) - Columbus police have arrested a tenant in the strangulation death of a well-known real estate agent.

39-year-old Ricky Powell, also of Columbus, is charged in Monday night's death of 70-year-old Herta Bailey.

Investigators said the slaying occurred when Powell met with Bailey to discuss an eviction because he failed to pay his rent.

Police said during the meeting, the victim was assaulted and choked to death. Muscogee County Coroner Bill Thrower said Bailey's body was found in the trunk of her car Tuesday night.

Investigators also allege Powell stole Bailey's credit cards and used them to pay utility bills.

Powell was charged with murder, kidnapping, identity fraud and theft by vehicle.
