Stalled Farm Bill Could Hurt Millions

The farm bill has been stalled in Washington all this year.
The original five year government plan mandates everything from farming to food stamps.

At the end of this month, that legislation will run out affecting millions and that has local farmers upset.

"Without knowing exactly what the parameters are of the program, that can have an impact of what farmers do and what they fell is going to be a risk as far as what they plant, when they plant, and if they plant," says Randy Griggs, Executive Director of the Alabama Peanut Producers.

Three important questions that are in the hands of lawmakers on Capitol Hill.
For right now Washington continues to play the partisan blame game, not answering those questions.

"Shame on them!! Shame on them for abandoning our farmers, our economy, and families who need us to act," says Rep. Steny Hoyer.

"President Obama, won't work with us to in common ground or urge senators and democrats to take action, why? Because democrats have failed to lead,” says Speaker Jon Boehner.

An un-passed farm bill has led to the potential of millions of dollars in food stamp programs being cut.
Those cuts will be felt at thousands of food banks across the country as more families seek help, and the wiregrass area united way food bank is no exception.

'It would hurt us substantially."

A hurt that the average family may feel if legislators can't agree.

"The items that would go to the grocery store and buy yourself, that's the quality of the items, that we get through the farm bill, but of course if the quantities are cut back we won't have enough to get out and help the people that are our clients, that need assistance," says Executive Director of the Wiregrass Area United Way Food Bank, David Hanks.

An un-finished bill that leaves much more than funding hanging in the balance.
