TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- Florida lawmakers are signing off on a $70 billion budget.

The Florida Legislature - splitting largely along party lines - voted late Friday to adopt a new state budget that calls for cuts to health care, state universities and includes thousands of layoffs.

The new budget calls for increased spending on public schools this fall but the new money won't make up for cuts made a year ago.

Democrats railed against the new budget, saying it hurts the state's working class. They also spoke out loudly against hometown projects that were placed in the budget by top Republicans.

Republicans, however, said they balanced the budget without raising taxes.Once Gov. Rick Scott receives the budget he can sign it, veto it, or use a line-item veto to eliminate specific projects.
