Assistant State Attorney Larry Basford told six Bay County jurors that Crews slammed 2-year-old Sammie Hagans’ head into a door on Sept. 19, 2010, while she was babysitting him.
Crews claimed the child fell off the bed after his diaper was changed. Sammie’s injuries, however, were inconsistent with that kind of fall.
Investigators found a dent in a bedroom door with blond hairs wedged into the wood.
“This child did not fall off this bed and hurt his head,” Basford told jurors.
“Just like this child did not jump up and hit his head on that door and wedge his hair into this dent.”
Jurors deliberated for almost two hours after hearing two days of testimony before convicting Crews as charged.
Crews, who faces a mandatory term of life in prison, will be sentenced by Circuit Judge Michael Overstreet on June 5.
