CRESTVIEW, Fla. (AP) -- The Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office is resubmitting evidence to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement 32 years after a man's body was found near some picnic tables at a Florida Panhandle rest stop.
Sheriff's investigator Randall Joiner says they're hoping to find "foreign" DNA that will eventually lead them to a suspect in the killing of 42-year-old Bert Eldon Gross.
Gross was on his way from Fort Myers to Phoenix when he apparently stopped at a rest stop along Interstate 10 near Crestview on Feb. 22, 1981.
Investigators initially had a suspect, but he passed a polygraph test and later died.
Gross's gun, which he was killed with, was never found. His truck was found weeks after the shooting in Bay County.
