Uncertain Future for Fla. Prepaid Tuition Program

Florida's prepaid college tuition program could be in jeopardy.

A bill that would allow the state's flagship universities to enact massive tuition increases is on its way to Governor Scott's desk.

Critics say if he signs it, it will only be a matter of time before the program ends.

Parents who have prepaid plans now are in the clear as the plans are legally-binding contracts, but if the tuition bill becomes law the fine print could become more lengthy because the program would no longer be able to predict how high tuition will be in the future.

That would leave the program with no way to calculate parents' payments, meaning the program would have to shut down.
