Many tornadoes strike outside of urban areas, but one tornado struck a major metropolitan area in Florida on this day in history.
On the afternoon of May 12, 1997, a tornado touched down around 2pm Eastern time. The tornado crossed the highly-traveled Interstate 95 and then proceeded through downtown Miami.
The storm damaged apartment buildings, blew out windows of skyscrapers, and damaged cars. Several people were injured, but the F-1 rated tornado caused no deaths.
The storm is perhaps most remembered for being captured with numerous photos and videos as it moved through downtown portions of the south Florida city.
