JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is closing all its campgrounds and parks because of the ongoing federal government shutdown.

The closure begins Wednesday at noon and includes campgrounds and parks in Stuart, Moore Haven, Clewiston and Alva along waterways fed by Lake Okeechobee.

Lt. Col. Thomas Greco says the corps will reopen them for public use as quickly as possible.

Corps officials also announced Tuesday that they were suspending permits issued to the state and local governments for seawall construction and repairs, canal maintenance and other shoreline projects. The suspension affects projects in Cape Coral and Miami-Dade County.

Officials say that because of the shutdown, the corps can't provide proper oversight or consult with other federal agencies to ensure compliance with U.S. environmental laws.
