A Fort Walton Beach resident reports getting a call Monday morning from someone claiming to be her grandson and asking for money for an emergency. The resident was familiar with this common scam and hung up on the individual but wanted us to let local residents know these calls have resurfaced.
This scam has appeared repeatedly in Okaloosa County and other areas in the last two years. It typically involves a phone call from someone saying that “their grandson” or another relative is in jail and “has asked them to call to get bond money” or some version of that story. Other times it’s that a family member’s wallet was stolen and they’re stranded with no cash.
Well-meaning local residents trying to help out someone in need have been victimized by these type pleas. Please be aware of these criminal enterprises if you are targeted. Also, never give out personal information to a stranger.
If you think you’ve been the victim of a scam or fraud, contact the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office Fraud Hotline at 850-651-7674.
