TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) -- Tuscaloosa police say they have charged a suspect in connection with the disappearance of a 30-year-old man who has been missing for 10 days. Alexius Foster was taken into custody by the Mississippi Highway Patrol during a traffic stop in Union County, Miss., after Alabama authorities obtained a warrant for his arrest. Foster has been charged with attempted murder in the July 17 disappearance of Antonio Lashawn Williams of Tuscaloosa.
TALLADEGA, Ala. (AP) -- Authorities in Talladega County say a 65-year-old woman is dead after her car was struck by a tractor-trailer as she pulled onto a highway from a restaurant parking lot. Kay Wood of Sylacauga died Friday afternoon. Authorities say she was leaving Mama Ree's Restaurant when she pulled out in front of a westbound tractor-trailer on U.S. 280. The truck hit Wood's Dodge Intrepid from behind and pushed the car across the highway.
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- The Army Corps of Engineers has activated its emergency operations center in response to high water levels at Lake Okeechobee.
The corps' emergency operations center in Jacksonville was activated Friday. The lake stood at 15.66 feet by Saturday.
The corps fully opened its locks around the lake Thursday to protect the aging Herbert Hoover Dike. Corps spokeswoman Jenn Miller tells The Palm Beach Post that inspectors found "minor flow increases" in areas where the earthen dike was known to seep.
Miller says the corps wants to be ready to react to any effects from tropical systems this year.
Weekly inspections of the dike began this week when the lake's water level reached 15.5 feet. Daily inspections will begin if the water level reaches 16.5 feet.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- Florida health officials say they're investigating 23 cases of a stomach bug that has infected more than 320 people in 14 states and New York City. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says most of the cyclospora infections occurred from mid-June to early July. It's not clear whether the cases are all linked.
TAMARAC, Fla. (AP) -- Authorities say hundreds of cases of cigars worth $250,000 have been stolen from a South Florida warehouse. According to the Broward Sheriff's Office, surveillance video showed multiple suspects breaking into the Florida Distributors Inc. warehouse in Tamarac early Friday. The video shows the suspects getting into the warehouse through the roof.
Ga. teen pleads guilty to killing younger sister
PERRY, Ga. (AP) -- A middle Georgia teenager has pleaded guilty to killing her 12-year-old sister and setting fire to their house in hopes of covering up the crime.
The Telegraph of Macon reports (http://bit.ly/16ikXri ) 18-year-old Carmen Collins was sentenced to life in prison Friday after she pleaded guilty to malice murder and arson charges in the July 2012 slaying in Kathleen, about 25 miles south of Macon.
Prosecutors say the teenager shot her younger sister, India Ja'Nai Collins, six times with her father's gun while chasing her through the house. Prosecutors say Collins was running away from home and got angry when her younger sister tried to stop her and threatened to call their parents.
Collins was arrested in Columbus two days after the killing. She was scheduled to stand trial in August.
Ga. officer suspended after police dog dies in car
WOODSTOCK, Ga. (AP) -- A Georgia police officer has been suspended and fined after his police dog partner was left in the officer's patrol car and died.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports Woodstock officer Chad Berry is being reassigned to the department's traffic unit after his 10 day suspension. He has also been fined $325.
Woodstock police Sgt. Randy Milligan said Friday the officer's canine partner, a Belgian Malinois named Spartacus, was found dead in Berry's patrol car the night of June 18. Milligan says an investigation found Berry had left the dog in the car when he got home from work. Investigators concluded he didn't intend to harm the animal.
A necropsy determined heat stroke was the probable cause of the dog's death.
Berry had been a police canine handler for seven years.
CUMMING, Ga. (AP) -- Authorities have charged a pickup truck driver with misdemeanor vehicular homicide in a crash that killed a 19-year-old motorcycle rider in metro Atlanta. Cameron James Fullerton of Cumming was killed Friday afternoon when his motorcycle was struck by a Ford pickup truck attempting to turn into a store parking lot.
Ga. power line installation may slow I-95 traffic
MIDWAY, Ga. (AP) -- The Georgia Department of Transportation says motorists traveling Interstate 95 south of Savannah can expect some unusual sites by the roadside over the next two weeks.
The DOT says crews working for the Georgia Transmission Corporation will begin installing utility poles and power lines parallel to the interstate starting Saturday. Helicopters will be used to get the poles in place.
The work is scheduled to during the next two weeks in Bryan and Liberty counties near the Georgia coast.
The DOT says signs advising motorists of the utility work will be placed on I-95 and extra law enforcement will be dispatched to the area. Stephan Thomas, a DOT district utilities engineers, says drivers should focus on the road and not let themselves be distracted by the work.
