NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- Anglers across the Gulf of Mexico will be able to resume red snapper fishing in federal waters next week.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says a 14-day season will open at 12:01 a.m. local time on Tuesday, Oct. 1.

It raised the total allowable catch from 8.46 million pounds to 11 million pounds earlier this month, when it set the season.

Just over half of the quota goes to commercial fishermen. NOAA Fisheries says commercial boat owners will get their new individual fishing quotas on Tuesday or shortly afterward.

For recreational anglers, there's a two fish daily limit and a minimum size of 16 inches.
