Officers from the DeFuniak Spring Police Department responded to the area of 1911 Walton Road on Sunday, Aug. 4 in reference to a bear sighting.

Officers say the bear was in a tree and did not display any aggression. Police monitored the situation to make sure area residents and the bear were not harmed.

Since January, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has logged over 360 calls about bears in a four county area. That is up from 249 calls during the same period last year.

DeFuniak Springs Police would like to remind citizens of the following tips for bear awareness.

1) Never ffed a bear, it causes them to be a nuisance
2) Studies indicate human trash accounted for 70% of bear-human conflicts
3) Bears generally will avoid humans unless they grow accustomed to eating human food or garbage
4) Leave bears along
5) Report sightings to local law enforcement for informational purposes.
