SANTA ROSA BEACH, FL -- One man is dead, and another has been hospitalized following an accident near Santa Rosa Beach. The South Walton Fire District pulled two men from the water in the Gulf of Mexico on Sunday afternoon just before 6 p.m.
Both men were unconscious. One was revived and taken to an area hospital. The other was pronounced dead at the scene.
Neither man has been identified. Investigators report one victim was apparently caught in a rip current and taken under the water. The second man then entered the water, and was also pulled under by rip currents.
SWFD lifeguards responded and pulled both men from the water. At the time both victims entered the water, red flags were flying and weather conditions were rain with lightning in the area. This was an unguarded beach area.
