The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office has received recent reports of mail being stolen from residents’ mailboxes.
Thieves are often looking for everything from cash, checks, and packages to bank account or credit card numbers.
The following list is a few simple ways residents can protect their mail from the U.S. Postal Service.
•Promptly remove mail from your mailbox after delivery and be sure to place it on hold if you’re away from home for an extended period of time.
•Deposit mail in a mail slot at your local post office or hand it to your letter carrier.
•Never send cash or coins.
•Use a locking mailbox if possible.
•Use on-line bill pay when possible and request on-line statements.
•Don’t use your Social Security Number, phone number, or drivers’ license number on your checks.
•Shred all mail after you’re done with it.
•If you see suspicious activity, report it immediately.
