WALTON COUNTY, FL -- It's a simple mistake that many people make. They leave their car unlocked with their belongings inside just to run into their homes or a convenience store.
Unfortunately, this gives thieves an opportunity to take those items from the car.
The Walton County Sheriff's Office is adopting a nationwide program called Hide, Lock, Take. They are posting signs in residential areas and businesses to remind the community to hide their valuables under their car seats, lock the car door, and take their keys with them.
Officers said this simple reminder can help stop future burglaries.
""If you can help us prevent these crimes before they are happening, it'll help the community," Lieutenant Danny Garner said. "It'll help us."
Most of the car thefts have happened on the south-end of the county, but officers want to remind everyone in the community to lock up.
