Mental Illness and Gun Rights in Florida

Gun rights advocates are at odds with each other in Florida.

A bill on Governor Rick Scott’s desk would keep anyone who voluntarily checked into a mental institution from buying a gun if they were found to have mental health issues.

The National Rifle Association (NRA) is backing the bill. The organization says the measure could prevent lone-wolf massacres like the Colorado movie theater shooting.

Other gun rights groups are opposing it, saying any attempt to infringe upon the right to buy a gun could lead to a slippery slope.
