JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) -- Authorities say an off-duty firefighter has died after falling from a tree he was cutting in a northeast Florida backyard.
The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office says Jacksonville firefighter Jason Bishop was pronounced dead Saturday at a hospital.
Sgt. Dan Janson tells The Florida Times-Union (http://bit.ly/LoV7Hq ) that Bishop was 30 to 40 feet off the ground, cutting a branch that had forked at the top of the tree. The branch fell, striking the tree's trunk.
Janson says Bishop was harnessed to a part of the tree that then split and fell.
Other firefighters said Bishop often did handyman work and was cutting the tree for an acquaintance.
Bishop, a 39-year-old former Marine, joined the fire department 10 years ago.
