Man in Wheelchair Hit by Car

A wheelchair bound man is in critical condition after a car hit him Wednesday night near Panama City. The accident happened around 9:30.

66 year old Eddie Scharick was traveling north bound on Bob Little Road, in his wheel chair, when a small car struck him. He was thrown about 25 feet from his chair.

E-M-S Paramedics rushed the man to the hospital.

Neighbors say 7 Scharick rides his wheelchair in the roadway most nights because there are no sidewalks in the area.

A police investigation is still underway. Alcohol is not suspected to have played a role in the accident and the driver has not been charged.

Witnesses say Scharick had no reflector on the wheelchair and had supposedly been asked not to ride on the roadway but continued to do so because the gravel roadside was too difficult for him.

Should have had a seat belt. Should have had lights and reflectors. It's bad this happen, But if you wanted to go somewhere you should have ask someone to take you in a car.

It is sad, but the roads were made for cars not wheelchairs. This is really becoming a problem here. Drivers rely on those around them to use common sense. Getting on a busy road doing only 2 MPH is not very smart. Hope Mr. Shcarick is OK.
