Man Guilty of Fatally Beating Landlord

PENSACOLA, Fla. (AP) - A Pensacola man has been convicted of fatally beating his landlord with a 2-by-4.

An Escambia County jury found 49-year-old Donald Verne guilty Wednesday of second-degree murder. He faces a possible life sentence.

Authorities say Verne hit 51-year-old Peter Delmonico with a piece of lumber multiple times in July at the landlord's home. Verne rented a mobile home behind the house.

A couple going to visit Delmonico found him bloodied and unconscious on his kitchen floor. The also found Verne, who said he had just got out of the shower and didn't know what happened. Verne left the apartment but was picked up several blocks away with blood on his shirt.

Delmonico died at a hospital several days later. He had suffered multiple skull fractures and severe brain injury.
