FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) -- A 45-year-old Naples man will spend 30 days in prison and 60 days in home detention for killing a Florida Panther.
Todd Alan Benfield was sentenced in federal court Thursday. He pleaded guilty to killing the feline in 2008 with a bow and arrow. The News-Press (http://lb.vg/ls1dG ) reports that Benfield later moved the panther's body in an attempt to conceal the killing. Killing a Florida panther is a violation of the Endangered Species Act.
Florida wildlife experts say only about 100 panthers remain in the wild.
